Read the positions first

A three-card spread gives each card a job. In a past, present and future reading, the first card describes a thread from what came before. The middle card brings attention to the situation now. The last card explores a possible direction from here. Write your question before drawing so all three positions answer the same thing. Keep the order visible as you read.

Past can mean an earlier choice, an established habit or the starting point of your question. Present asks what is active today. Future is an opening for interpretation: it describes a possibility to consider as the situation develops. A spread offers a symbolic reading rather than a guaranteed prediction. You can return to your question and see which details fit your actual circumstances.

Read the cards together

Start with each card's picture and usual meaning, then bring its position into the sentence. A card about beginnings has a different role in the past than in the future. Look across the spread for repeated colours, figures, suits or movements. Notice whether the middle card continues the first card's theme or changes its direction. Let the third card respond to that movement.

Try a short sentence for each position before joining them. Keep the original question beside your notes. If you use reversed cards, choose that approach before the draw and keep it consistent across all three. Describe what the reversal adds to this particular position. The relationship between the cards gives the reading its shape; separate dictionary meanings provide only the starting points.

Example spread: a made-up reading

Question: “What can I explore in my next drawing project?” Past: Eight of Pentacles. Present: The Fool. Future: Three of Pentacles. In this example, the past card suggests repeated practice. The present card introduces a fresh experiment. The future card offers the image of making something with others. Together, the cards tell a possible story of practiced skills meeting a new idea and finding an audience for the work.

Bring the spread back to your question

That example is an interpretation of a fictional draw. Your question and cards supply different details. Read your three sentences aloud, then write one sentence connecting the whole spread. Keep the card names, their positions and the date with your notes. When you revisit the reading, you can see exactly which images prompted each thought and how your own understanding of the question has developed.

Starfelt answers your own question from inside the practice, with your card or placement as the starting point. Your first answer is free.
